My first book titled “Haunted” has been published (and is now available on Amazon). Here is an excerpt from that book (or rather the first chapter)……..
Rya Fortin was really looking forward to the weekend. She works as an assistant for a big realtor, one of the top realtors in the state to be exact. While they normally stay busy, the last couple of weeks had been busier than normal. She has plans to enjoy the weekend off at a cabin at a nearby resort that was a couple of hours away, where she was going to relax and catch up on some reading.
It was a Thursday and Rya managed to get off work early. Being it was October, it was a pretty chilly day and it was extremely cloudy. It wasn’t raining, at least not yet anyway, but it looked like it would start at any minute if the bottom fell out of those clouds.
One of Rya’s favorite things about this time of year is the leaves changing colors on all the trees. Instead of seeing green everywhere, she saw a lot of red, orange and yellow. The other thing Rya likes about this time of year is the holiday. With Halloween just around the corner, everyone had their houses and yards decorated for the holiday. She also loved seeing the kids dress up in their cute little costumes.
Rya went home real quick to grab her stuff before she heads out of town for the cabin. Her landlord, old Mrs. Lola Huntington, already knows she is going to be out of town for the weekend and knows to keep an eye on her condo (and collect her mail for her, of course). Mrs. Huntington may seem really strict but she takes care of the people who rent from her. That’s the reason Rya likes renting from her in the first place. After she made quick work of packing her stuff in the car, Rya began heading out of town. Rya liked living in Stanford, Illinois, but she was glad to be leaving town for a bit.
Even though the drive only took a couple of hours, it seemed to take forever. Maybe she was just looking forward to getting the weekend off…..or maybe it was that Rya realized that she needed to go to the bathroom. She stopped off at the park ranger station to collect the keys for the cabin after showing them her reservation for the cabin and her ID. As soon as she pulled up to the cabin, she jumped out of her car and ran into the cabin to use the restroom. Once that was out of the way, she immediately unpacked her stuff out of her car and took them into the cabin. She wanted to get this part over with because it gave her a few minutes to stretch her legs after the long car ride.
Once everything was put away, Rya breathed in a sigh of relief. She was finally here…..she could feel the air was cleaner out here versus being in the city and she wanted to take a minute to breathe it in.
Rya didn’t linger long though because it was still chilly out, plus, she didn’t want to get rained on. She grabbed some of the firewood off the front porch before heading inside because her first order of business was building a fire in the fireplace. After building a fire, she went in to the sink in the kitchen to wash her hands.
Rya pulled her tablet out so that she could get started on her next e-book. She made sure the tablet had a full charge the night before but she made sure to bring the charging cable with her anyway. She didn’t want her tablet to run out of juice before she made it back home. After all, she did plan on using her tablet a lot this weekend.
She was quickly immersed in her first book sitting in front of the fireplace.
creak
Rya immediately looked towards the bedroom where she heard the noise come from. She set her tablet down on the couch next to her, got up and slowly walked over. Given that she had already taken her shoes off and she was walking around in her socks, this gave her the ability of making no noise when she walked across the floor. She decided to grab the poker from the stand next to the fireplace…..if someone was in the cabin with her then she wanted to be able to defend herself if she had to.
Rya inched towards the bedroom with the poker raised. When she got to the door, she grabbed a hold of the door knob and pushed open hard. She waited a second to make sure she didn’t see any movement in the room before reaching her hand just inside the door to flip the light on. There wasn’t anybody there and she wasn’t surprised…..there wasn’t anybody in there while she was unpacking her things. The noise was probably just the cabin settling.
Rya’s stomach started to growl so she decided to make dinner. While she boiled some water in a pot, she cut up a sausage into small pieces and added it to the water along with some red beans and rice. After it finished cooking, she scooped some into a bowl and then grabbed her drink before she plopped back down on the couch in front of the fireplace. She didn’t realize how hungry she was until after she scarfed down a whole bowl and then she went back for seconds. She didn’t fill it up as much the second time because the stuff really fills you up when you eat it. After he second helping, she got up to wash the dishes. When she finished, she turned around to find her favorite mug sitting out on the counter. She had brought it with her in case she made some hot chocolate while she was staying in the cabin but she was shocked to find it sitting out on the counter like that.
This boggled her mind. Strange noises she can blame on an old creaky cabin but she couldn’t blame this on the cabin. She put the mug away thinking maybe she was just really tired and maybe she accidentally left it out while she was unpacking. She decides to go take a shower thinking that would help her relax. After her shower was over with, she went to dry off and noticed there was something on the mirror. She squinted and noticed “You will die!” written in the steam on the mirror. She was completely shocked. Who would write such a thing, plus, she knew she was suppose to be alone here in the cabin. She grabbed the poker that she left leaning against the corner before she exited the bathroom. She wasn’t going to take any chances of someone breaking into the cabin while she had been in the shower. She searched the entire cabin from top to bottom but found nothing out of place.
She goes back to build up the fire in the fireplace. After washing her hands in the kitchen sink, Rya goes to make herself some hot chocolate and took up her spot on the couch in front of the fireplace. Rya went over the events that occurred since arriving at the cabin. Weird noises she could blame on an old creaky cabin…..but the other stuff? She knew she was alone in the cabin and the closest people to her was the park rangers at the station. However, she knew the park ranger station where she got her keys from was nearly two miles up the road from her cabin. Plus, she couldn’t figure that the park rangers would sneak into someone’s cabin to write hateful messages in the steam in the bathroom mirror while she was in the shower. She eventually just chalked it up to having too much stress related to her work. She did have a long week after all.
Rya decided to change out of her robe and into her pj’s before taking up her spot again on the couch. She had brought with her a fleece blanket that happened to be her favorite. She had draped it over the back of the couch when she was unpacking and she pulled it on top of herself because her feet get cold real easy. When she was comfortable, she got her tablet out and began reading again.
Rya eventually grew tired and she knew she needed to get some sleep. So she turned off her tablet and went to brush her teeth. She made one last round through the cabin which included putting the fire out in the fireplace and turned off any lights that she had left on. When she went to lay down in the bed, she made sure to cover up under the denim quilt that laid on top of the bed because she knew it would keep her warm. It didn’t take her very long for her to fall asleep but she did wake back up at some point. When she looked at the clock that was on the nightstand it read 1:37 a.m. and she rolled over on her side until she was facing the bedroom window. That’s when she noticed the outline of a figure in the window……..
