Disney Is Remaking a Classic Pirate Movie, and It's Not 'Pirates of the Caribbean'

Filmmaking duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz are teaming up with Disney to make a new version of Treasure Island. The duo, who previously directed the critically acclaimed film The Peanut Butter Falcon, have been making a splash in Hollywood recently, and their new film, Los Frikis, is arriving this Christmas.

Schwartz and Nilson'sTreasure Island project is currently in development, so there are not many details yet. The directors spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to promote Los Frikis and teased the upcoming collaboration. Nilson said their pitch “has the patina of the 1970s surf world.” This could hint to a more modern riff on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. Schwartz further described their approach, saying:

“It’s an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island, and if they [Disney] ever make it, it would be so fun. It has the vibes that we do, and there’s found family, brotherhood, drama and outsider energy,”

Schwartz and Nilson also directed 2019's critically acclaimed indie film The Peanut Butter Falcon starring Zack Gottsagen, Shia LaBeouf, and Dakota Johnson. The story follows a young man with Down syndrome after he runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a pro-wrestler, befriending an outlaw who becomes his coach. In many ways, the story is comparable to Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Schwartz and Nilson's work in Peanut Butter Falcon makes them a great pick for another intriguing approach to a classic story.

Treasure Island, originally titled The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys, is a historical adventure novel written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. This is also not the first time Disney has adapted the story. There was a 1950 film adaptation starring Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins, a young boy who finds a map to the coveted treasure of the notorious pirate Captain Flint. There's also Disney's 2002 animated cult classic Treasure Planet, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Martin Short, and Emma Thompson voicing the main cast. While not a hit at the time, audiences now love the adaptation for its unique genre-blending approach and steampunk aesthetic. The story placed the swashbuckling adventure in a futuristic space setting created using 2D and 3D animation. Treasure Island is also a coming-of-age story with action, excitement, danger, rambunctious characters, buccaneering, buried gold, and more. It's still early days for the project, but here's hoping there are no rough seas ahead.
